Ozone/Prolozone

What is Ozone?

It is made of 3 atoms of oxygen (O3). Oxygen we breathe is made of 2 atoms of oxygen (O2). Ozone is made by splitting O2 molecules and reforming in O3. Hence why it is sometimes referred to as activated oxygen.

Why Use Ozone?

Ozone is a powerful oxidizer and kills bacteria, fungus, parasites, and viruses without building a resistance, unlike antibiotic medications. Bacteria and viruses are able to mutate and form a resistance, or become immune to many medications like penicillin. However, it is not possible for bacteria and viruses to build a resistance or be immune to ozone because the bacteria and viruses have little to no antioxidant enzymes. Our body has antioxidants which protect the healthy cells from being oxidized (burned up) by ozone. Therefore it a great disinfectant and antimicrobial. Researchers in 2003 demonstrated the human body makes ozone {” Lerner and Wentworth demonstrated that antibodies are able to produce ozone and other chemical oxidants when they are fed a reactive form of oxygen called singlet oxygen. …., Lerner, Wentworth, and Babior demonstrated that the oxidants produced by antibodies can destroy bacteria by poking holes in their cell walls.” From reference https://www.scripps.edu/news/press/2003/022703.html}

Dental procedures we can use ozone for:

  • reversal of numbing
  • periodontics
  • endodontics
  • fillings
  • nasal insufflation
  • ear insufflation
  • ozone trays for teeth remineralization
  • for bleaching sensitive teeth
  • decreasing/eliminating tooth sensitivity
  • using ozone oils to heal around implants and soft tissue.

Why Use Prolozone?

Prolozone is a healing injection technique that promotes the body to heal itself. It does this by using activated oxygen in gas form which consists of Ozone (1-3%) & Oxygen (97% -99%) , procaine and may use other minerals or vitamins. By providing the body with these nutrients it allows and helps the cell membranes to heal, improving circulation to the area, reducing inflammation & swelling while promoting stem cells and blast cells This helps reduce & eliminate pain and can tighten loose ligaments. The response to treatment varies from person to person, but most people only need 3-6 treatments

Dental procedures use Prolozone for:

  • TMJ/TMD
  • Jaw muscle/face pain
  • sinus pressure/infections
  • headaches
  • dental infections

How Ozone Dental Therapy is Used

Ozone therapy is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after forms of dental care. Ozone treatment has a number of outstanding benefits that can make it much easier for you to maintain peak dental health. Ozone can be beneficial for your teeth, your gums, and the surrounding structures.

Our ozone dental therapy options use targeted oxidization to disrupt and destroy bacteria and other harmful agents in the mouth. Controlled exposure to ozone in the mouth quickly kills many types of micro-organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Ozone can be applied before or after any type of procedure, and helps heal many situations that previously were untreatable with traditional dental treatments such as reversing permanent numbness. Ozone treatment for teeth can be helpful in a number of situations, so usage depends on your specific needs and what Dr. Frith discovers in your case.

Exciting Applications of Therapeutic Ozone

Ozone has been used for decades to accelerate wound healing. Its use in dentistry picked up steam over the last two decades, and the research on the topic is truly extensive. Ozone is one of the most important technological breakthroughs in modern dentistry.

One of the more interesting and practical uses of therapeutic ozone is reversing cavities in the early stages of development. Ozone molecules effectively wipe out bacteria and their associated waste products deep within the tooth by bypassing the outer enamel.
Its operations in the body make ozone perhaps the most potent disinfectant found in nature.

Although ozone can be applied virtually any time, it is best used as early as possible to create the most dramatic protective effect against tooth decay. Regular dental checkups at Masterpiece Smiles can help you catch problems before they become severe.

Prolozone Therapy: The Differences

Prolozone therapy is a specialized approach to rebuilding ligaments in the head and face that are suffering from chronic pain. Prolozone injections are a bit different from traditional treatments with ozone: These prolozone shots activate the basic healing process of cell membranes and may include procaine, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B-Complex, dextrose, folic acid, saline and steroid in certain situations.

When the body’s cells are ruptured or agitated, some level of inflammation occurs. Arresting this inflammation is essential to ensuring the body can heal the underlying problem. Prolozone both reduces inflammation and improves blood flow, allowing the body to distribute natural healing agents to the site of the problem. This kick starts healing even in stubborn wounds.

Not many dental therapy courses teach about prolozone, as only advanced practitioners are able to use it successfully and unlock all its dental health benefits. In many cases, patients achieve total freedom from pain within just a few treatments.
